Everyone had warned her not to go........ her family, her\nfriends, they all thought it was too dangerous for a young American woman to be\non her own 'over there'. But she was at a\nsidewalk café with 4 other young women, all wanderers, a couple of them from\nAmerica and a couple of them from Western Europe. The all knew enough English\nto talk together and were having a good time. A slightly older woman, a local,\njoined them. She immediately gave them all a proposition: there was a 'client'\nwith a lot of money, and he enjoyed judging impromptu beauty contests. And the\n5 of them would be perfect.

She explained \"4 of you will leave with 25,000 dollars\nAmerican cash. That's an 80 percent chance of winning.\"

The were led into a nearby building. The first room was a\nfirst rate beauty parlor. The 'guide' told them \"we will do your hair, and\nmake you beautiful for the contest. The client likes that.

So they all were shampooed, blow dried, and styled. Their\nfaces and eyes were worked on with makeup. Annie's stylist spun her chair and\nshowed her a mirror.
