“I can’t go on like this”, I said to myself as I looked into the reflection of my face in my car’s interior rear view mirror.

I had just gotten home from the gym, like every tuesday evening, when this very familiar feeling of numbness came over me once again. As I sat in my vehicle, mentally unable to step out, the last few months rushed through my head.

It all happened before. Being lost in a seemingly endless loop of grey, dull and tiring days. The feeling of being restrained by the life i’d built for myself.

I had thought that breaking up with my girlfriend, moving to a new city to get a different job might cure this part of me, but this assumption was clearly wrong, as I found myself in the very same predicament yet again.

All the excitement of the first couple months had left my body and had been replaced by soul-crushing boredom. And still, objectively, there was nothing in my life I could’ve complained about. My healthy, athletic body, high-paying job, active social life and decently sized house made it seem like I was in total control. From an outsiders perspective, I lived a perfect life.

Every week, I tried to come up with new ways to escape this mental prison. Parachute jumps, Cave Explorations, Mountain climbs…I’d done it all. In each case, success was very short term though.

As I thought about new, possible activities to brighten up the upcoming months, the last bit of sunlight disappeared behind the horizon. Interesting enough, I still found beauty in moments like these.

Fixing the mirror into its correct position, I was hit by the image of a young woman walking past my car. The sound of my door opening must’ve caught her off guard, as she turned her head towards me with a startled look on her face.

This is when I saw her for the first time. The woman who’d change my life forever, just as I would change hers in an equally, if not more severe, way.

Her worried expression quickly switched to a relieved one as she watched me step out of my car. I was met with a warm, comforted smile and a quick head nod. As I mirrored her gesture, she turned back around to continue her walk home.

The whole interaction must’ve been less than 5 seconds, but it was enough for me to know that I needed her.

She didn’t leave my head. Not when I watched football. Not when I brought out the trash. Not when I brushed my teeth. She was omnipresent.

The next day, I made sure to rush my way home after the gym, in hopes of encountering this beautiful, charming, yet totally unknown woman.

I sat at my window, inspecting the pathway in front of the house. Even though I felt like a psychopath, there was a small, but very loud, voice on my head, telling me this was the right thing to do.

About an hour passed and the sun was long gone. Just when I gave up hope, I saw a small figure enter the scene from the left. Even with those barely illuminated circumstances, I immediately recognized her.

She walked the same path as she did the day before, staying in my field of vision for about 20 seconds before my neighbors house blocked my gaze.

Even though I quite literally sat on my couch for an hour, my heart was beating faster than it had in a long time. Adrenaline comes in weird ways sometimes.

A new problem arose in my head. If I asked her out on a coffee, it would surely end up the same way it always did. A couple months of fun before the inevitable boredom would set in once again. It would ruin all the magic she radiated. She was too special to turn into one of those forgotten ex girlfriends.

This same evening, I sat on my computer, browsing various websites as I saw a picture of a lightly dressed woman promoting her LonelyFans account. I’d never understood why anyone would pay money to see NSFW content. The internet was literally full of it. Fully free!

Just when I wanted to keep scrolling, I stopped myself to take a second look at the woman.
