Jenny, fused to the core, felt the surge of enriched agony and coldly approved. The cycle was now truly inescapable, stretching backwards as well as forwards, an eternal loop of violation feeding the hungry, newborn gods.

Sister watched, her icy hatred satisfied, her survival assured by the perfection of the suffering she helped orchestrate. The harvest was eternal, and now, infinitely layered.

Mrs. Henderson stood on the attic landing. Her hand rested on the cold brass knob. A sudden, inexplicable chill raced down her spine, colder than the dust-chilled air seeping from under the door. It felt like a ghost walking over her grave, or the echo of a scream she’d never uttered.

She shuddered, a flash of total terror, pain and suffering shot through her mind. She pulled her hand back as if burned. A feeling of dread seeped into her mind, there was no real reason for it, just a feeling. A feeling that should not be ignored. The attic was just junk and old memories best left buried.

She turned away shocked and shaken, the wooden stairs creaking softly under her weight as she descended. The door remained shut. The lock remained in place. Dust settled.

The universe breathed.

She reached the bottom step just as the front door swung open. Sunlight streamed in, warm and golden, painting the hall in late afternoon hues. And there they were, Jenny, her Jenny, cheeks flushed with laughter, backpack slung carelessly over one shoulder. Behind her, crowding the doorway, beaming and breathless: Chloe, Maya, Sophia, Emma, Zoë, and Lily.

Mrs Henderson was filled with relief, like a heavy weight had just been lifted from her shoulders.

All six. Whole. Unbroken. Lily wasn’t hunched in phantom agony; she was bouncing on the balls of her feet, eyes sparkling. Chloe’s throat showed no trace of an electrified gag, only a smear of chocolate ice cream. Sophia’s arm wasn’t a shattered ruin; it was looped easily around Maya’s shoulders. They radiated the vibrant, chaotic energy of teenagers just released from school.

\"Hi, Mum!\" Jenny chirped her voice bright, untouched by chrome or cosmic torment.

What were these thoughts? Mrs Henderson was half remembering, half remembering what though?

Jenny dropped her backpack with a thud. \"We stopped for ice cream. Hope you don’t mind the invasion!\"

The thoughts were now gone, faded and forgotten as thought they had never exsited.

Lily giggled, nudging Zoë. \"Jenny promised we could raid your cookie stash, Mrs. H!\" Maya added, already heading towards the kitchen.

\"We brought extra spoons!\"

The scent of sunshine, cheap perfume, and melting chocolate chip mint filled the hall. The girls moved past her, a whirlwind of chatter about pop quizzes and soccer tryouts and the unbearable injustice of Mr. Wilson’s algebra homework. Their footsteps were solid on the hardwood. Real.

Mrs. Henderson leaned against the banister, the wood smooth and familiar under her palm. She watched them disappear into the kitchen, their laughter echoing back, a sound as pure and uncomplicated as spring rain. No violet light. No screams. Just sunlight, and the lingering sweetness of ice cream, and the solid, undeniable presence of her daughter and her friends. Alive. Here.

The attic door, upstairs, remained firmly locked. A forgotten thing.

She took a deep breath, the air clean and free of ozone or blood. The chill was gone, replaced by warmth that seeped deep into her bones. She followed the sound of laughter into the kitchen.

Somewhere in a parallel universe time lines swirled and realigned.

The universe held its breath in that dusty attic, and in the cold of deep space Obsidian Requiem exhaled and roared with infinite frustration.
