As he held the belt high above his head, Reg briefly paused. It was\nonly for a couple of seconds but it seemed that time stood still. She had heard it was pretty awful.\nThe government let young women know that, as another disincentive to\nillicit sexual activity. Abortion had been banned near the start and\nso, if an unmarried girl got pregnant, she had to carry the child to\nterm and then give it up for adoption.
