The heavy oak door to Hook's cabin closed with a soft, final click that sounded like the lid of a coffin shutting. For a moment, there was silence, broken only by the steady creaking of the ship's hull as it carved its way through the night-black waves of Neverland.

Wendy stood trembling in the middle of the room. Her nightgown was torn and soiled with soot and tears. The warm, flickering light of a single lantern danced across the nautical charts spread out on the large table, making the shadow of Captain Hook's figure appear monstrous on the wall. He had his back to her, staring out the wide stern window into the darkness. In his right hand, he held a wine glass, its contents as dark as blood. His hook of polished steel rested on the window frame, scratching softly across the glass as if etching an invisible threat into the pane.

\"He was a fool,\" Hook said, without turning around. His voice was calm, almost gentle, which made it all the more terrifying. \"A puffed-up little cockerel who thought the sun rose only to admire his shadow. He truly believed he could just fly in here and set you free.\"

He paused and took a slow sip of his wine. \"A careless leap, a hook that found its mark... and splash. Crocodile food. A legend can end that quickly.\"

Wendy pressed her lips together to suppress a scream. The image of Peter's fall, his surprised, pain-twisted expression, was seared behind her eyes. The hope of Neverland had been extinguished, sinking with him into the depths.

\"They're crying for you, do you hear?\" Hook continued, now turning slowly to face her. His eyes, cold and dark as the ocean beneath them, studied her without pity. \"They're calling for their 'mother.' A mother who led them to this ruin.\"

\"Let them go,\" Wendy whispered, her voice a hoarse, broken wreck. \"They've done nothing. It's my fault. Punish me.\"

The thought of the lost boys and girls and her two brothers in the antecabin, awaiting their fate, was torture to her.

A thin, cruel smile played on his lips. He stepped closer, the distance between them shrinking with each deliberate stride. \"Oh, I intend to, my dear. But punishment can take many forms.\" He stopped directly in front of her, so close she could smell the rum and sea salt on his breath. Carefully, almost tenderly, he raised his hook and ran the cold, curved tip over a strand of her hair. Wendy flinched, but there was no escape.

\"I could send them over the plank. One by one,\" he said softly, his voice a venomous hiss. \"I could make you watch as the little lights of their lives go out. Or I could hand them over to Smee, to work them as cabin boys until their backs break and their hearts are as hard as this steel.\"

He lowered the hook and placed his human hand under her chin, forcing her to look at him. \"But there is another way. A way that ensures their survival.\"

Tears now streamed freely down Wendy's cheeks. \"What... what do you want?\"

Hook's gaze became intense, possessive. \"Peter Pan promised you stories of adventure. I offer you reality. He wanted you as his make-believe mother. I want you as... everything else.\" He released her chin and took a step back, spreading his arms as if presenting his entire, gloomy kingdom to her. \"You will stay by my side, Wendy-girl. You will tell me my stories when the nights are long. You will pour my wine, receive my orders, and fulfill my every wish without hesitation, without a word of protest. You will never see the children again, but you will know that they are alive—as long as you are obedient. You will be my constant, my little songbird in a gilded cage.\"

He leaned forward, his face just inches from hers. \"You are unconditionally at my disposal. Your will is mine. Your time is mine. Your life is mine. In return... they keep breathing.\"

Wendy closed her eyes. She saw the children' faces before her—their laughter, their fear, their infinite trust in her. She thought of Peter, who had died for her. His rescue had failed. Now the burden lay on her shoulders. There was no flying, no happy thoughts, no more fairies to light the way. There was only the cold, crushing choice.

Slowly, like a puppet whose strings had been cut, she sank to her knees. Her gaze was empty, broken.

\"Yes,\" she breathed into the silence of the cabin.

Hook straightened up, a triumphant glint in his eyes. He hadn't just killed Peter Pan. He had conquered his hope, his story, his Wendy.

\"A wise decision, my love,\" he said, holding out his hand, not to help her up, but to command. \"The first of many. Now, get up. The captain is thirsty.\"

The hours crawled by like wounded animals. Wendy moved as if in a nightmare, her limbs heavy, her mind numb. She had been dragged from the deck right after the fight, without a moment to collect herself or put on anything other than her thin, now-torn nightgown. Hook had ordered her to arrange the sea charts, dust the books on the shelves, and polish the brass instruments. Each task was an escape, a desperate attempt not to think about the whimpering below deck, not to think about the empty hole in her chest where hope for Peter had once lived.

Finally, Hook sank heavily into his padded leather armchair and, with a gesture of his hook, pointed to a decanter of deep red wine on a side table. \"Pour me a glass,\" he commanded. His voice was quiet, yet it cut through the silence of the cabin like a razor.

Wendy took the crystal glass, its weight seeming immense in her trembling hand. Her fingers were cold and clumsy. As she poured the heavy, dark wine from the decanter, her hand shook uncontrollably. A small stream splashed over the rim of the glass and spilled like a bloodstain onto the polished, light wood of the table.

A tiny mistake. A meaningless slip. But in the oppressive silence that followed, it grew into a monstrous offense. Wendy froze, holding her breath. She didn't dare look up.

\"A small stain, Wendy-girl,\" Hook said after an endless second. His tone was almost professorial, without any overt anger. \"And yet... a great carelessness. Discipline is the foundation of order. At sea, as in life. A lesson you apparently still need to learn.\" He reached for a small silver bell and rang it. The shrill tone made Wendy flinch.

Moments later, there was a knock at the door, and a stocky, nervous-looking man in a red woolen cap entered. It was Smee. His gaze darted from Hook to Wendy and then to the wine stain, and a flicker of understanding and fear crossed his face.

\"Smee,\" Hook said gently. \"Bring me the cane. Our guest must learn the rules of hospitality.\"

\"B-but, Cap'n...\" Smee stammered, but immediately shrank back under Hook's icy glare. \"Aye, Cap'n.\" He disappeared and returned a moment later with a thin, flexible rattan cane, which he handed to his captain with trembling hands.

Hook didn't take it. \"You will administer the lesson, Smee,\" he said with a hint of contempt. \"My hand is meant for more important things than the chastisement of a careless girl.\" He turned to Wendy, who stood as if turned to stone. \"To the table. Bend over it.\"

It was not a suggestion. It was a command that tolerated no dissent. Slowly, each step an agony, Wendy went to the large chart table. She placed her hands on the smooth surface, her heart hammering against her ribs. She closed her eyes and prayed to a mother she might never see again.

She heard Hook step behind her. She felt no hand, no touch of flesh. Instead, she felt the unmistakable, ice-cold tip of his hook slide under the hem of her thin nightgown. Slowly, agonizingly, he drew the fabric upward. The cool cabin air hit her skin; goosebumps covered her back, her legs. He pulled the fabric higher and higher, until her entire backside was bare and defenseless, exposed to the air and the gazes of the two men. The humiliation was a physical pain, sharper and deeper than any wound. She bit her lip to keep from crying out and tasted the salt of her own blood.

\"Three strikes, Smee,\" Hook commanded, his voice as cold as the steel that still held up the fabric of her gown. \"So that she remembers the importance of a steady hand.\"

Wendy heard Smee swallow nervously. She heard the soft hiss of the cane as it swung through the air. And then she waited for the pain.

The first blow struck her with a burning, sharp force that stole her breath. A suppressed cry escaped her lips. The second followed quickly, before the pain of the first had subsided, bringing tears of anguish and shame to her eyes. On the third, she bit her lip so hard the pain nearly overwhelmed her, but she swallowed the sound. It was all the resistance she had left.

\"Enough, Smee. You may go,\" Hook said, as if nothing had happened. Smee bowed awkwardly and hastily left the cabin. With a casual flick of his wrist, Hook let the fabric of the nightgown slide back down.

\"Stand up.\"

Trembling, Wendy obeyed. The pain throbbed, but the humiliation burned hotter. Hook studied her for a moment, then went to a large wooden chest in the corner and opened it. He took out a bundle of cloth and threw it at her feet. It was a simple light-blue dress, a white apron, and a matching cap. The clothes of a maid.

\"Your nightgown is unsuitable for your new duties,\" he explained coolly. \"Put this on. Now.\"

Wendy stared at him in disbelief. \"Here? In front of you?\"

\"I said 'now',\" he repeated, sinking back into his armchair, wine glass in hand. \"I must ensure you aren't hiding any weapons or other nonsense in your clothing. Consider it part of your training.\"

With stiff, clumsy fingers and under the impassive gaze of his dark eyes, Wendy began to change. She pulled the torn nightgown over her head, every inch of exposed skin feeling as though it were being seared by his gaze. For a moment she stood completely naked, defenceless, trying desperately to cover herself with her arms.

Hook didn't stir. He just took a slow sip of wine and spoke into the humiliating silence as she slipped into the scratchy linen of the dress. \"You should understand how things will work from now on, Wendy-girl. The children's safety depends solely on your good behavior. Any dereliction of duty, any carelessness, any hint of defiance will have consequences.\"

She put on the apron, her fingers trembling so much she could barely tie the knot. \"Small mistakes, like spilling my wine,\" he continued, his tone matter-of-fact, \"we will handle privately. Here, in this cabin. As we just did. But larger offences...\" He paused as she placed the cap on her head and tied the ribbons under her chin. \"...open disobedience, thoughts of escape, or attempting to incite the crew... those will be punished publicly. On deck. Before the entire crew. So that everyone on this ship, from the children in the hold to the lookout in the mast, knows exactly to whom you belong.\"

She stood before him, finished. The transformation was complete. The girl from London was gone. In her place stood a servant in a blue uniform, with burning welts on her backside and an empty, broken gaze.

\"That's better,\" Hook said with a hint of satisfaction. \"Now, the table is still dirty. Wipe it clean.\"

The days that followed merged into a gray, endless routine. Wendy learned the sounds of the ship: the creaking of the planks, the rhythmic slap of waves against the hull, the distant calls of the sailors in the crow's nest. Her life shrank to the size of Hook's cabin. She swept the floors, polished the brass until it gleamed painfully in her eyes, and refilled wine whose smell now made her nauseous.

Hook rarely spoke to her, except to give orders. He was not a beast who raged uncontrollably. His cruelty was calculated, precise, and all the more terrifying for it. He treated her with the cold fairness of a master toward a useful tool. As long as she functioned, she was left alone. But the knowledge of the children, locked in the dark belly of the ship like animals in a cage, gnawed at her relentlessly. Hook made no move to release them, and every one of her timid questions about it was punished with an icy silence that weighed heavier than any blow.

On the morning of the fourth day, he ordered her to empty his chamber pot. It was another humiliation, which she endured with her head bowed and teeth clenched. She carried the heavy ceramic vessel up the stairs into the fresh air of the deck. The salty spray hit her face, and for a moment she closed her eyes. But freedom was an illusion. Dozens of pairs of pirates' eyes followed her every move, a mixture of curiosity, greed, and contempt.

As she leaned over the railing to empty the contents into the churning sea, it happened. A hand shot out of nowhere and grabbed her breast firmly. The grip was rough, almost frantic. Wendy gasped in shock and spun around. Before her stood one of the cabin boys, barely older than herself, with feverish eyes and the down of a first beard on his upper lip. He hadn't seen a woman up close in two years, and the desperation was written all over his face.

He was about to grab for her again, but at that moment a sharp voice rang out. \"Get your filthy hands off her!\"

Smee stood just a few feet away, his usually nervous face frozen into a grimace of determination. The boy flinched back as if he had burned his hand on a hot stove and stammered an apology before stealing away into the shadows of the deck. Smee gave Wendy a brief, almost pitiful glance and then hurried below deck without another word. Wendy trembled all over, not just from fear, but also from foreboding. She knew where Smee was going.

Half an hour later, the boatswain's bell shrilled across the deck. \"All hands on deck! All hands!\" The pirates assembled, grumbling and curious. Wendy, who was just polishing Hook's boots, froze as Hook rose from his chair. \"You're coming with me,\" he said. It was not a question.

On deck, a tense silence reigned. Hook stepped before the assembled crew, his presence alone enough to silence everyone. Smee shoved the trembling cabin boy out of the crowd to the captain's feet.

\"This scum,\" Hook began, his voice dangerously calm, \"dared to lay his hands on something that does not belong to him.\" His gaze shifted to Wendy, who stood at the edge of the scene, and then back to the boy. \"He broke a rule. My rule.\"

\"Strip him and tie him to the mast,\" he commanded. Two burly pirates grabbed the boy, who was crying and begging for mercy. They tore the clothes from his body until he stood naked and defenseless before them all, and then tied him tightly to the mainmast.

Hook gave a signal to Smee, who handed him a cat-o'-nine-tails. \"You will watch,\" Hook hissed to Wendy as he walked past her to position himself in front of the boy. He forced her to step into the front row.

The whip hissed through the air and struck the boy's back with a wet smack. He cried out, a piercing sound full of pain and terror. Wendy wanted to look away, to close her eyes, but Hook's cold gaze held her captive. He forced her to witness every one of the ten lashes. The sound, the blood that ran down the boy's back, the screams that slowly turned into whimpers.

It was not a punishment for the assault on her. It was a demonstration of ownership. A warning to all. When it was over, they left the unconscious boy hanging from the mast. Hook threw the bloody whip onto the planks. \"This is what happens to anyone who touches my property,\" he shouted to the crew. Then he turned to Wendy, whose face was ashen.

Later that day, back in the apparent safety of the cabin, Hook studied her with a satisfied nod. \"You learn quickly,\" he said. \"You took your lesson without tears and theatrics. That is useful.\" He gestured to the door. \"Your duties are no longer confined to this cabin. The galley must be scrubbed and the passageways must be swept. You may now move about the ship to do your work. But remember this: the children remain off-limits. And any unnecessary word with the crew will land you at the same mast as that boy.\"

He had not given her freedom. He had enlarged her cage.

The next few days, Wendy used this new, deceptive freedom. She worked from sunrise to sunset, always under the watchful eyes of the pirates. But her only thought was of the children. One night, as a storm was brewing and the crew was busy reefing the sails, she saw her chance. The guard post in front of the companionway to the hold had been abandoned.

With a hammering heart, she stole a ring of keys that hung on a hook in the galley and crept down the dark stairs. Her hands were trembling so much that she had to try several keys before one fit in the lock of the heavy wooden door with a loud squeak. Inside, it was dark and smelled of brackish water and fear. The lost children were huddled in a corner. When they saw Wendy, their eyes widened. They had been crying, but they were alive. In a corner stood jugs of water and a basket of hardtack.

\"Wendy!\" a voice hissed from the darkness. It was one of the girls, perhaps thirteen, who stumbled toward her with a mixture of relief and fear. The others followed, their hands grabbing for her, their bodies trembling with suppressed fear.

\"Don't be afraid,\" Wendy whispered, stroking their hair as her own tears ran down her cheeks. \"I'm here. I had to see you.\" She knew that every second down here was an enormous risk. \"I will find a way.\" \"I promise,\" she said, hugging them tightly. \"I'll be back as soon as I can. Be quiet. Be strong.\"

She locked the door as quietly as she could and hung the ring of keys back on its hook in the dark galley. The storm raged outside, covering the sound of her footsteps as she felt her way through the swaying passageways back toward the lieutenants' quarters. Her heart was still pounding wildly against her ribs, a mixture of fear and the small, dangerous triumph of having seen the children.

Suddenly, she stopped dead in her tracks. In an alcove, faintly lit by a swinging lantern, she recognized a figure. It was the cabin boy. He had been cut down from the mast, but not freed. He was still naked, his back an open, bloody map of pain. Heavy iron shackles on his wrists and ankles chained him to a ring in the ship's wall.

A wave of pity and guilt washed over Wendy. She was the reason for his condition. Cautiously, she stepped closer. \"I... I'm so sorry,\" she whispered into the darkness, her voice barely audible over the howling wind.

The boy didn't move. His head hung limply on his chest, his breath coming in shallow, irregular gasps. Wendy thought he hadn't heard her or was already delirious. She was about to turn away when his head slowly lifted. In the dim light, his eyes were two glowing coals, filled with a hatred so deep it took her breath away.

He opened his mouth, and what came out was not a plea, but a hoarse, triumphant croak. \"You were with the children.\"

Wendy froze. The blood turned to ice in her veins. \"I saw you,\" he rasped. \"Heard the keys.\" A faint, terrible smile appeared on his swollen lips. \"If you don't want the Cap'n to find out... you're going to be nice to me from now on.\"

She stared at him, unable to move. She had thought Hook was the only devil aboard this ship. Now she realized she had only escaped from one cage to fall straight into the next—one that was perhaps even filthier and more unpredictable. She had a new, terrible problem.
