The Headmistress, who according to the sign above her door was\ncalled Mrs Cruickshank, was seated behind a large oak desk in a very old\nfashioned, oak-panelled room. She pointed to a chair in front\nof her desk for Mr Furzton to sit on and then turned to me:

\n\n\n\n

“Tom, welcome to our school. I was really hoping\nto meet you in happier circumstances and welcome you properly into our\ncommunity. I will have a chat with you in a minute - for now, would you mind\nwaiting in Mrs Lodenheim’s office?”

\n\n\n\n

As I was sitting in the secretary’s office, I\ncould hear the mumble of voices from next door. After about five minutes, I\ncould hear raised voices, particularly Mr Furzton’s voice. The door was yanked\nopen and my boss stormed out and left, without even sparing me another glance.\nI then heard the crackling intercom on Mrs Lodenheim’s desk: “Mrs Lodenheim,\nwill you please send Tom in now?”

\n\n\n\n

Once I was seated in the chair that Mr Furzton\nhad just vacated, Mrs Cruickshank turned to me, kindness personified:

\n\n\n\n

“I am so sorry you had to witness that scene,\nTom. This sort of behaviour is very rare here at the Hall. But Mr Furzton is\nunder a lot of pressure. One of the pupils he punished this afternoon has\nlodged a formal complaint, and since her account of what happened is corroborated\nby a witness we have had to put Mr Furzton on paid leave until a formal hearing\ncan be convened. You are likely to be called as a witness at that hearing, so\nthat I cannot go into the events in question with you so as not to colour your\ntestimony. However, the formal hearing is unlikely to be before next week so\nthat we are finding ourselves in a little bit of a bind when it comes to\ndiscipline at this school.

\n\n\n\n

So how have you been finding your first day so\nfar?”

\n\n\n\n

“Hmm, aaah, interesting. Challenging, too. Mr\nFurzton gave me some training on a dummy and trusted me to carry out my first\nreal punishment once I had passed a test on the number 3 cane.”

\n\n\n\n

“That’s good to hear!”, she replied. “As you\nwill by now appreciate, we pride ourselves on our discipline regime in that it\nis fair, appropriate and, above all, swift. Its most fundamental aspect,\nhowever, is that punishments are administered not by our teachers, but by\nspecialised discipline officers which you aspire to become. That way, we do not\nundermine the bond of trust between teacher and student, and we ensure that all\npunishments are carried out in a consistent and even-handed way. Finally,\ndiscipline officers are highly trained professionals, ensuring that none of our\ngirls is injured or permanently harmed in the process.”

\n\n\n\n

She seemed to have run out of things to say.\nThere was a bit of an awkward silence.

\n\n\n\n

“So, I have been considering my options for\ndiscipline. One way would be to let punishment slips accumulate. Another to ask\na discipline officer from one of our sister colleges to come here for a\ntemporary secondment. But none of them has more than one discipline guy on the\nstaff at the moment. Which takes me to you.”

\n\n\n\n

“Me?” I stammered, confused. This had been my\nfirst day!

\n\n\n\n

“Well, yes. Mr Furzton seemed very taken with\nyou and your skills. Of course, you would be limited to the number 3 cane, on\nsafety and insurance grounds. However, there is no reason why you should be\nrestricted to 10 strokes - the rules say nothing about the number of strokes,\nnor about how many layers of clothing the pupil is allowed to wear during the\npunishment. So, if you are amenable, I would simply instruct all our teachers\nnot to prescribe any punishment other than with the number 3 cane and simply\nvary the number of strokes and layers of clothing in order to adjust the\nseverity of the punishment to match the severity of the offence.”

\n\n\n\n

“Hmm, that might work.”, I was forced to say,\nfeeling very unsure of myself. “But I must admit that I have not really\nunderstood the escalation system - so would I simply ignore escalations?”

\n\n\n\n

“I’m glad you ask - as it happens, Mr Furzton\nhas been working on an escalation program for our new computer system to be\nrolled out in all our network of colleges. You enter the prescribed punishment\nand the level of escalation and the computer automatically calculates a number\nof alternative new punishments. You then ask the girl for a suggested\nescalation and if this exceeds the computer’s suggestion, well and good, that’s\nwhat she gets. If it does not, the computer will give you a number of\nadditional aggravating options for you to choose from. How does that sound?”

\n\n\n\n

“Fine, thank you. I have never used a computer\nbefore, though …” [It just occurs to me that I failed to mention that all this\nhappened in the early eighties of the last century!]

\n\n\n\n

“Oh, our IT officer, Miss Young, will show you,\ndon’t worry. In fact, she can show you tomorrow morning, first period, so that\nyou’d be good to go in time for the first recess.”

\n\n\n\n

“Ok, then. I’m still a bit worried, though. I’m\nthe same age as some of your girls - what if they do not obey me?” (or, worse,\nlaugh at me or tease me, I was thinking to myself).

\n\n\n\n

“Don’t you worry about that. They will. Anyone\nyou send to me is guaranteed a much more severe, public, punishment.”

\n\n\n\n

“Public?”, I asked, shocked.

\n\n\n\n

“Yes, for maximum deterrence. Public punishments\noccur about four times a year, and can be prescribed by a properly convened\ndisciplinary panel. They are carried out in one of the other schools in our\nnetwork during a special afternoon assembly. We are doing it like that in order\nto minimise the disruptive effect it would have on learning if punishments were\ncarried out in front of a pupil’s own peers. As you may know, our network\nconsists of three schools for girls and three schools for boys - we punish the\nboys in one of the girls’ schools and vice versa. Very effective, I assure\nyou!”

\n\n\n\n

I now understood why the threat to be sent to\nthe headmistress had always produced the desired result earlier that afternoon.\nI seemed to have run out of excuses.

\n\n\n\n

“So, it’s agreed, then. Miss Young will fetch\nyou from your room tomorrow morning to run through the escalation program with\nyou - you are then expected to be in the discipline room during all break\ntimes. Good luck and have a good rest tonight!”

\n\n\n\n

I wasn’t so sure about my prospects for sleep.\nFirst, the bed had looked seriously uncomfortable. Second, my head was full of\npictures of clothed, semi-clad and naked girls being punished, and expectations\nof having to do the same on my own the next day. Third, I was wondering whether\nmy mum had packed any tissues - I had a feeling I would be needing them later\nthat day (I was right, as it turned out, and she hadn’t - I smuggled some loo\npaper out of the lavatory).

I had had some sleep the next morning, even\nthough the bed turned out to be every bit as uncomfortable as it looked! I got\nup at six and had a quick shower in the girls communal shower room. Obviously,\nat that hour, I was alone. Freshly showered I got dressed in my uniform and\nwent to breakfast - this was served in the main refectory. Although I sat at\nthe staff table (known as the ‘High Table’, as I found out later), I was the\nonly one there for breakfast. Somebody, one of the house mistresses, I assumed,\nhad been there before me but, when I arrived, I was the only one there,\nattracting stares and giggles from the assembled girlhood. My uniform did not\nhelp - they knew what my role at their school was to be.

\n\n\n\n

I was back in my basement room by 8:30 - first\nperiod began at 8:40 and at 8:45 Miss Young knocked on the door. I wasn’t\nreally surprised she was a very young teacher - the older ones probably\nwouldn’t know one end from a computer from the other - but I was surprised that\nshe was very pretty indeed. A real stunner. She introduced herself and then\naccompanied me into the discipline room. The computer terminal was sitting in a\ncorner. While I had played games on my brother’s old C64 and my own Commodore\nAmiga, I had never used a network computer before. You had to give it commands\n- if you didn’t, all you got was a blinking arrow. Miss Young, or Carol, as she\nasked me to call her, showed me how to enter ‘escal’ and wait. The screen now\nasked: “No Strokes?” - Carol entered 10. “Implement?” Carol entered ‘Cane 3’ (she\nhad been told that was all I was qualified to use, clearly). “Layers?” Carol\nentered 3, but the computer rejected this. It was either 2, 1 or 0, apparently,\nwhich made sense (panties and skirt). She entered 2. Now more text appeared:\n“Please enter the dates of the pupil’s last three attendances” and a diary\nshowing the last calendar month. Carol selected one date three days previously\nand today’s date. A message appeared:

Based on your input\nthe pupil appeared twice before in the last seven school days and once before\ntoday. Is that right?

\n\n\n\n

“Oops, that’s not what I meant!”, said Carol.\n“It seems that it does not mean the current visit, only visits in the past. So\nbetter remember that!” She entered ‘y’ and the screen really came to life.

\n\n\n\n

Based on your input\nthe pupil is due four escalations (one for the second appearance within one\nweek, two for the third appearance within one week and one for appearing twice\nin a single day).

“I still don’t really understand how this works\nin practice”, I worried. “I mean, I am meant to ask her what escalations she suggests\n- how do I know if this is greater or lesser than what the computer says? There\nare so many options - really very complicated.”

\n\n\n\n

“Calm down,” Carol said in an irritating,\nsoothing voice. “It’s really very simple. Say she were to suggest 20 strokes.\nThat would get her only to the second escalation. We don’t have a choice when\nit comes to implement, so that there are two escalations to go, plus one extra\nfor falling short in her suggestion. So you could give her 31 strokes plus one\nthird, that is, er, 41. Or the 20 she asked for in her bra. But the starting\npoint is the 20 she asked for, so you can’t start from scratch and give her 13\nin the nude. But don’t worry, the computer has all this programmed in!”

She hit return, and the computer asked:

“So that shouldn’t be too hard, right?”, she\nasked, with a knowing smile and a furtive glance at my crotch area. It must be\nadmitted: I was visibly aroused. This flustered me.

“Hmm, yes, that should be fine, thanks.”

\n\n\n\n

“Ok, I’m off to teach a Pascal class. Good\nluck!”

\n\n\n\n

And she left. On my own in the discipline room I\nhad another good look around. It was going to be an interesting few days!

\n\n\n\n

During the first recess, or break, as it is\nknown this side of the Atlantic, I could feel my heart rate go up as I was\nwaiting for that knock on the door. But it never came. The break bell sounded\nagain before I knew it. Another 90 minutes of anticipation - for, who knows,\nmaybe again nothing!

\n\n\n\n

They lasted for much longer than 90 minutes, at\nleast that’s how I experienced them. The next bell announced lunchtime. Surely,\nthere would be a knock - just one girl would be all I would ask for!

\n\n\n\n

And there it was: a faint knock.

\n\n\n\n

I opened the door to the office and there were\ntwo girls waiting outside, both around 15, one blond, one brunette, the blond\nslim, the brunette borderline overweight. Both looked sheepishly to the floor\nas I asked them in and closed the door. They handed me their slips: both called\nfor 18 strokes on skirt.

\n\n\n\n

“So how come you deserve this?”, I asked,\ngreatly daring.

\n\n\n\n

“We exchanged notes in class”, said the blond,\ndemurely.

\n\n\n\n

“Ok, who would like to go first?”, I asked.

\n\n\n\n

The blonde sighed and moved to go into the next\nroom. I looked at both slips and got their files - Nicole and Amelie, though I\nhad by now forgotten who was who … ouch. Oh well!

\n\n\n\n

The blonde walked straight to the small frame,\nthe one that was basically just a stool and lay over it. She did this so\nmatter-of-factly that it occurred to me to check the file when she had last\nattended. But which file? Well, I checked them both, and, sod’s law, Nicole had\nattended the previous Tuesday, in other words, fewer than seven school days\npreviously, while Amelie’s last visit was more than a month back.

\n\n\n\n

“Sorry, your name has escaped me”, I said,\nembarrassed. “Are you Nicole?”

\n\n\n\n

“Yes, I am.”

\n\n\n\n

“I am afraid you have earned an escalation\nbecause this is your second visit in a week.”

\n\n\n\n

“Oh, I had hoped you wouldn’t know about\nescalations, being new and all. Too bad.”

\n\n\n\n

“Hmm.” I didn’t like her cheek, but wasn’t sure\nif I had the power to do anything about it.

\n\n\n\n

“So you know you must suggest an escalation …\nwhat do you suggest?”

\n\n\n\n

“22 strokes then, instead of 18”, she said,\ntrying to sound indifferent. “You add one third per escalation, easy!”

\n\n\n\n

I wasn’t too sure of my maths … and blushed a little,\nhaving attended a much less posh school. But using the computer helped. I\nclicked on the previous Tuesday, then entered 18, 3, 2, and the computer\nreturned 24 as the first escalation. She had got the maths wrong!

\n\n\n\n

“Sorry, I think your maths is wrong. 24 would\nhave been correct.”

\n\n\n\n

“Fine, make it 24 then!”

\n\n\n\n

“That’s not how it works. You get an additional\nescalation, as you well know.”

\n\n\n\n

I entered ’22’ for pupil suggestion and the\ncomputer gave me the option of 24 on panties or 32 on skirt.

\n\n\n\n

“Please take off your skirt and I’ll give you 24\non panties!”

\n\n\n\n

“No way! We were told in assembly that you can\nonly cane us, and we get to keep our skirts on!”

\n\n\n\n

I wasn’t too sure of my ground. That sounded\nsomewhat reasonable. But surely the computer had been programmed only to give\nme actual options? It did not suggest other implements than the number 3 cane,\nfor example. What was I to do?

\n\n\n\n

“Ok, I’m sorry, I must have misunderstood\nsomething. We’ll make it 32 on your skirt, then.”

\n\n\n\n

“How do you figure that? No way, that’s too\nmany!”

\n\n\n\n

“Well, I guess it’s one third more than 24 …,\nbut I’m not sure. Shall we say 30?”

\n\n\n\n

I realised that I was bargaining with her -\nshowing weakness. Not an auspicious beginning! But then again, I was hardly\nolder than her!

\n\n\n\n

She agreed to 28 and bent over the stool. I was\nangry with her and really put my back into it, but she remained stoic and did\nnot utter a sound. She then left in a huffy sort of way. This had not gone the\nway I had pictured it in my head!

\n\n\n\n

Amelie, the slightly overweight girl, was next.\nShe was not quite as stoic but kept her composure, though there was quite a bit\nof moaning and a few tears.

\n\n\n\n

When she had left, I filled in the two files.\nAmelie’s was simple, but I wasn’t sure what to do about Nicole’s. In the end, I\nthought honesty was the best policy. I explained what had happened, that I had\nbeen unsure of myself and had allowed her to talk me into a lighter punishment.\nI also documented that she had had ‘attitude’ throughout.

\n\n\n\n

I needed to find out if Nicole had been right in\nher claim that I wasn’t allowed to tell them to take off items of clothing. I\nwas too embarrassed to seek out the Head, however. I had forgotten the way to\nher room, anyway. So I thought I’d just see what the next girl with an\nescalation would say. I was not as eager for the after school session to arrive\nthan it had waited for the lunch hour, but still …

The hour arrived, and there was the knock I had\nwaited for! The first girl I saw, waiting outside, was Amelie! More escalations\nto work out! There was just one other girl, a very young one, around 12 or 13,\nlooking very sheepish. Full of good resolutions, I told Amelie to wait and took\nher in first. She handed me her slip, it called for 10 strokes on the bare\nbehind! So much for me not being allowed to ask them to take anything off!

“So you know what your punishment is, right?”

\n\n\n\n

“Yes”, whispered the girl. “Would you please\nturn around while I strip?”

\n\n\n\n

I wasn’t happy about this, but then again, too\nembarrassed to refuse. So I turned around, and when I turned back again, I was\nmet by the sight of her tiny little behind on the cushion of the stool, legs\ntightly pressed together, but there was no denying it: her little slit was\n(just) visible between them. I was going to make this last!

I got hold of the cane and raised it.

\n\n\n\n

“Count each stroke, please!”

The unexpected\nimpact made her shift position even more, spreading her legs so that I could\neven see her bottom hole.

“Two’, she breathed, as she was rearranging her\nlegs.

Again, the cane hovered in the air. I was truly\nenjoying this. This time it came down, after a 30 second delay, and she\nscreamed.

“Four, five”, from her, but she was now\nconcentrating on the pain, forgetting her exposure and humiliation in front of\nan adolescent boy.

Her legs were now spread reasonably wide,\naffording me great views. I took my time drinking it all in while keeping the\ncane raised. I didn’t really want to strike, fearing that she would shift\nposition again - and my view could not really be improved upon, I had to\nconfess to myself.

\n\n\n\n

But all good things come to an end. As stripes\nformed on her bottom, and she realised how exposed she was, she clenched up\nagain and stayed like that, as my cane hit her another five times.

\n\n\n\n

She was crying hard, whether of pain or\nhumiliation I couldn’t fathom, grabbed her panties and put them on without\nwaiting for or expecting me to turn around.

I called in Amelie.

“Oh yes, you are right. Let me put this in the\ncomputer …”

“Ok, you seem to know the drill. You have earned\ntwo escalations, so what punishment do you think would be appropriate?”

\n\n\n\n

“I will take 40 fully naked, please.”, she\nreplied, very quickly.

I gasped. I had not expected this at all. This\nwas clearly rather more than required, but the rules were clear that, if she\nexceeded the ‘tariff’, she’d still get precisely what she asked for.

I played it cool. “Ok, that gets you over the\nline, by quite a lot. But you’ve made your bed and must lie in it.”

\n\n\n\n

She wasn’t the most attractive girl ever,\nparticularly after Doris … but this was still going to be great. Then I had an\ninspired idea:

“You realise that if you get another escalation\nyou will have to visit the Head? So you’d better keep still.”

\n\n\n\n

“Oh, I didn’t know. Can you please tie me up,\nthen?”, she begged.

\n\n\n\n

“Ok, if you want me to”, I grumbled, and pointed\nat one of the more elaborate punishment frames. Get on that one then, when\nyou’re ready.”

\n\n\n\n

The frame would allow me, as I had found when\ninspecting it during the day’s long, boring hours, to position her so that her\nbottom would be prominently displayed on a cushion installed for that purpose,\nwith her legs spread and, the best bit, her breasts in the air - the top shelf\nbeing so low that she would be able to support herself by leaning on it with\nher upper arms, with her upper body up in the air.

I sat down at my desk, which was fortunately\nplaced facing the room rather than the wall, and got busy filling in Doris’s\nfile, while Amelie was slowly disrobing. She was doing this in what I can only\ncall a provocative way. I pretended not to pay her any attention.

As I was finishing up, there was a knock on the\ndoor and Mrs Lodenheim came in.

“How have you been getting on, Tom? The Head\nwould like to see today’s files, have you finished them?”

“Just this minute, madam. Here they are.”

\n\n\n\n

“Thanks. Please come and see the Head and 9:30\ntomorrow - she’d like to debrief you and discuss your first ‘solo’ day! For\nnot, good night!”

\n\n\n\n

I was hungry. There was nothing for it, I had to\njoin the teaching staff and the pupils in the refectory …
