“Zarina, where are we going?” Abdul asked, for what seemed like the hundredth time.

“My dear husband, constantly asking the same question again and again will not change my answer. It’s a surprise. For your birthday.” Zarina, Abdul’s wife, said.

Zarina and Abdul had been married for over seven years by now. They had two daughters aged six and three respectively. Theirs was an arranged marriage set up by their respective families. Zarina was told when her marriage would but not with whom while Abdul had been at least informed about Zarina’s background first. Zarina was dressed in the typical garb of a Muslim woman. From head to toe, she was covered in black fabric. Her body was covered in a flowing gown of black fabric which reached her ankles and completely covered her arms. A black scarf was tightly wound around her head in the form of a hijab. Since she was in the car with only her husband around, she had lifted her niqab or face veil and flipped it over her head to reveal her face.

Abdul, on the other hand, was dressed in a formal attire. He wore crisp ironed pants and a white shirt. His coat was discarded over the back seat for the time being. He was following the directions to a location pointed by the navigation system built into their car. Abdul was extremely frustrated as they had been driving for two hours now on the national highway. The closest city was at least fifty to sixty kilometres behind them. All around them was vast desert with no living soul evident. A change was soon indicated in the navigation system. It informed Abdul to veer into a small road away from the highway.

“Where the fuck is this place? We are going to get lost, I am telling you.” Abdul said.

“Shush now. We are nearly there. Just another half an hour they had said from the highway.” Zarina said.

Abdul controlled his outburst and kept on driving. Half an hour of silence later they encountered the first instance of greenery in the unforgiving desert. This interested Abdul immensely. If there was an oasis that his wife was taking him to then it would be the best birthday gift he would have ever had from his wife. Five minutes later, the greenery was accompanied by brick houses and shanties. Here and there people from the locality were visible and going about their work. Ten more minutes and they finally reached their destination. It turned out to be a ranch in the oasis. Abdul killed the engine and sat staring at the entrance. There was a big sign board which said Hameed’s Pony Farm in Arabic.

“We are here to buy ponies?” Abdul asked, incredulously.

“Something like that. Come on, let’s go inside.” Zarina said, flipping the niqab down over her face.

She opened the door and got out. Abdul had to retrieve his coat and follow. It wasn’t as if he could go against her wishes. A small dirt path led to a wooden house. Abdul and Zarina walked up the stairs where a man in the traditional garb of an Arab had come out to receive them.

“Welcome to my ranch, honoured guests. My name is Hameed. I am the owner and manager at this ranch. How may I serve you?” Hameed said.

Hameed was a strongly built man with an impressive height. Abdul’s mind conjured up an image of a stallion just looking at the man. He shook his head to disperse that image from his mind.

“Brother, I am Zarina Al Bashir, daughter of Sheikh Rezza. This is my husband, Abdul Al Bashir. We are here to check out the order I placed with you.” Zarina said, demurely.

Abdul gave a surprised look towards Zarina. Zarina ignored him and maintained eye contact with Hameed.

“My lady, welcome to my humble business. Please come in. Your package is ready and waiting for you.” Hameed said, with a deep bow.

Hameed went in through the door and Zarina finally looked towards Abdul. She gestured for him to go first and he reluctantly followed. He wasn’t sure what to expect as he went inside but it turned out to be a reception room. The decor was plush and the air conditioning was running on full blast. Abdul let the cool air relieve some of the heat his body had soaked from the desert. Hameed approached a wooden desk and retrieved a key from one of the drawers.

“Please follow me.” Hameed said.

He led Abdul and Zarina through another door. The door led to a long passage way that ended up connecting to a big barn. Abdul was silent as he entered the barn. There was a row of stalls separated by wooden walls about head high. Hameed approached the middle stall and used the key to unlock the wooden door. What Abdul saw inside shocked him to the core. Standing inside was a woman who had been transformed in such a way that she did not seem to be one. The best way Abdul could describe her was that she had been decorated as one would decorate a horse. She was completely bare. Barren of all clothing as well as any body hair. Her bald head was covered in a complicated kind of metal harness. The harness held a metal rod or a bit in the woman’s mouth just behind her teeth. A thin line of drool was dripping down from her chin. Something nagged at Abdul’s mind. The face of the woman seemed familiar. He tried to remember where he had seen it before.

A heavy looking metal collar graced the woman’s neck. A small bell hung from one of the d-rings on the collar. Those words immediately dampened the intensity of the woman’s mewling. Hameed turned back towards Abdul and Zarina.

“Brother Hameed, would you be kind enough to explain the various features that come with this package? I had ordered this package for my husband as a birthday gift. I am sure he is excited to hear all about it.” Zarina interjected.

Zarina simply nodded her niqab covered head indicating that she did not mind.

“Alright, let’s see. Standing before you is a deluxe special pony. With a standard pony, you get basic leather bondage. Nothing fancy. With a deluxe pony, you get metal restraints like this one but not as sturdy and they need to be secured with locks at various positions and points to secure the pony. “What is the heavy ring hanging from its septum onto its upper lip for?” Zarina asked.

“This ring is for attaching ropes or belt or a leash to the pony’s head. It helps in navigating the pony when it is hitched to a chariot. You tug to the left to indicate a change in direction to the left side and vice versa for the right. The septum being a sensitive part of the pony’s head results in near perfect and immediate response from the pony.” Hameed replied.

“We will have to try that sometime.” Zarina said, in excitement.

“Coming to the limbs. The pony’s feet have been moulded into special shoes that end in hooves. As you can see the pony’s hooves have been currently hobbled to prevent long range motion. The chain between the cuffs can be varied as per the owner’s desire. This one is quite a spirited pony and has tried kicking its handlers in the past. Hence, we keep it hobbled always. The pony’s arms are held together behind its back inside this leather arm-binder. Underneath the arm-binder, thick metal bands encircle its wrists as well as the elbows and hold them together at nearly touching distance. “Of course, my Lady. I will be outside if you need my assistance.” Hameed said and left them alone.

Zarina had waited until Hameed left before she approached the helpless and restrained woman. Abdul had found some spine now that Hameed had left them alone.

It means loyal or faithful. Ironic, isn’t it? Calling her by something that she was not in her past life. If you try to fight me or try to escape, I will leave you out in the desert to make your own peace with death. And I can guarantee you that it will be ugly. Abdul followed meekly behind his wife like a whipped puppy. He did not even spare a backward glance towards Wafiyyah. Wafiyyah watched in helpless rage as the barn door swung shut leaving her alone with her miserable fate. Zarina chatted amicably with Abdul as they walked leisurely back towards the reception area.

“Wondering how you got caught?” Zarina asked, coyly.

Abdul felt silence was the best course of action so he did not say anything.

“Hubby, my father is Sheikh Rezza. He hasn’t become a business mogul by luck or chance. He is cunning and he has always had his eyes on you ever since you married me. Your frequent business trips tipped him off that something was amiss. He pulled in a few favours with a government intelligence officer and we had a tail on you. They got everything. Your shady business transactions overseas. Your extravagant spending as well as indulging into haram activities. And they uncovered Anne Locke and her relationship with you.” Zarina said, calmly.

Both of them had come to a stop. Zarina was facing ahead. Abdul stood close behind unable to lift his gaze from the ground.

“Father was furious. He wanted to drag you as well as the heathen bitch back here and make an example of you. However, I stayed his hand. I was the one who had been hurt and betrayed by your actions. I decided to exact my own revenge. The same intelligence unit that had tailed you was tasked with luring Anne over to Saudi Arabia on some pretext. She fell into the trap and was disappeared as soon as she landed here. She has been declared a missing person now presumed dead. Authorities on both sides are helpless as they can’t find any trace of the woman. She was handed over to Hameed and he started his work upon her immediately. You just saw the final result. He is quite efficient, I have to give him that.” Zarina said, finally turning back to face Abdul.

“Divorcing you would have caused a scandal which would have ruined both our families. I don’t think I can love you again after what you did to me. However, looking at Wafiyyah will ease some of my hurt and serve as a reminder for what I can do to you if I so wish to. You will amend your ways. I won’t forgive you but we will maintain our relationship for the prestige of both side of families. No more business trips for you, though. Your passport has been confiscated. Your accounts have also been hacked and their control turned over to me. You do as I say or suffer the consequences. I will leave it at that.” Zarina said.

She turned back and walked into the reception area. Abdul was left standing in the passage way stunned to the core. He was fucked and he knew that. He slowly trudged up into the reception area. He knew he would have to win back Zarina if he wanted to have any semblance of normal life back again.

Wafiyyah heard the door to her stall open. She strained her ears to determine who it was that had entered her stall. Her blinders had been folded in over her eyes blocking her vision completely.
