To Be Executed By Hanging Tomorrow.

Annie sat alone in her cell. The floor and walls and ceiling were all\nsolid metal. There was a small metal\ntable and two metal chairs. She was\ndressed in the standard prison dress: A\nlight floral sundress with velcro down the front, and velcro on the\nstraps. She was waiting, knowing full\nwell this was her last Friday. She was\nto be hanged on Saturday. She was feeling\na weird combination of dread, and curiosity. \nWondering what hanging was going to feel like.

\n\n

She was also very indignant about getting tried and\nconvicted. They called it ‘sex crimes’. And Annie didn’t think it was fair. They were both adults, and it really had not\nbeen that weird.

\n\n

The door to the cell quietly opened and a guard walked in. He had a small duffle bag over his shoulder,\nand a food tray in his hands. He put the\ntray on the table and the bag on the floor. \nThe tray had a warm apple pie, a rocks glass, and a full bottle of\nvodka. Annie already had the bottle in\nher hand. She twisted the top off and\ndidn’t bother with the glass, just took three big swallows. Immediately she felt the warmth rush through\nher. The guard sat down on the other chair, across from her.

“Some of the equipment to be used in your hanging tomorrow”\nhe said. “It can help if you see it\nbeforehand, so it’s not such a shock”

Annie looked with curiosity. \n“Show me” she said.

\n\n

He leaned over and zipped open the bag. There were only two items in it……. a set of handcuffs,\nand a heavy white rope tied in a classic hangman’s noose, only about 2 feet\nlong, with a heavy steel loop at the end. \nHe put them both on the table. \nAnnie ran her fingers across the coils of the noose. “13” \nshe counted. Then, on an impulse,\nshe picked it up and put it over her\nhead, and down to her neck.

The guard smiled and reached across the small table and slowly\npulled the noose a bit tighter, too small now to slip over her head. \nAnnie gasped and shifted in her chair.
