Now, such criticism was by no means atypical for her work, but what caused the biggest stir were the claims that the male actor had not only been in the film against his will - even kidnapped to star in it - and, even more scandalous, that in the iconic end scene had actually been tortured to death. Even if he had survived, they said, after the movie the young man was simply trafficked to one or several of the many torture-dens around the world, to be abused by paying customers.

Eventually Sartou had even had to bring him out to make statements about his perfect wilfulness to star in the movie, to assure everyone that he was very much alive and safe, and that \"I was not hurt in the making of this movie\". Still, there remained a few conspiracy theorists who yet murmured that this was not the same boy at all, but another actor brought out to create diversion. He was shorter and even had different colored eyes, they said. But in any case, that was the end of the controversy.

Sometimes, when pressed about it, Sartou made brief and pithy comments about all the cruelty in her work. \"Yes it's exaggerated,\" she once said. \"It's cathartic. But it's also damn sexy.\" And once, \"No, I would never kill anyone. I would only fantasize about it. I want to play rough, there's always some boy. I don't need to kill him.\" Then a characteristic, albeit rare, wicked smile. \"Quite.\"

In an interview, Sartou was once asked how it could happen that women, once considered mainly as being passive, kind, and sexually subservient to males, could in such a short time become this way: dominant, unabashedly lustful, assertive and entitled, and so often plain cruel, she had only shrugged and asked, \"Did it happen?\"

At the affirmative reply to that, she had taken a puff of her cigarette and shrugged again. \"That's how.\"
