A Bystander’s Account: I Saw Him Broken

I saw the whole thing - from the cell gate to the last twitch on the cross.

I wasn’t there for him. I came for figs and oil, but the crowd was already gathering outside the prison. Someone said, “They’re flogging a seditionist, rapist and thief this morning - real one, not a drunk.”

So I followed the flow. You know how it is: Rome offers many entertainments, but few as pure and honest as a public scourging. No ticket, no stage. Just flesh and punishment.

They brought him out just after sunrise.

He was already filthy - gaunt from the cell, hair matted with dried sweat. He looked like nothing. I wouldn’t have looked twice at him in the street. But they say he’d stolen from a magistrate’s grain convoy and raped a young girl. Maybe tried to rally workers or slaves. That’s enough. Rome doesn’t let that go lightly.

He squinted against the light, stumbling barefoot. His ankles were raw from shackles. He didn’t speak.

Then they stripped him.

They pulled off the tunic. First just the robe, but then even the undercloth. He tried to fight it - covered himself, turned his hips - but that made it worse. They tore it from him, and he stood there naked as a peeled grape.

People laughed.

He was shaved too - all of it. Chest, legs, even down there. Rome sometimes does that before a flogging. Something about hygiene, sure, but we all know it’s for humiliation. After the fifth, he was already trembling. After the tenth, he was gasping like a fish.

They didn’t avoid anywhere. The lashes fell on his back, his flanks, his thighs, his buttocks. When it hit between his legs - and it did - he screamed. The crowd roared in delight. One man near me shouted, “That’s where the pride lives! Whip it from him!

And they did.
