As he held the belt high above his head, Reg briefly paused. It was\nonly for a couple of seconds but it seemed that time stood still. She\nremembered how confident young woman had been back in the day and how\nmuch she wanted to be like them, to dress in nice clothes of her own\nchoosing rather the drab garments allowed under the modesty code.\nThen another icy shard of pain juddered through her bottom and hips.\nWas this what childbirth was like? She had heard it was pretty awful.\nThe government let young women know that, as another disincentive to\nillicit sexual activity. Abortion had been banned near the start and\nso, if an unmarried girl got pregnant, she had to carry the child to\nterm and then give it up for adoption.

‘Aaaargh’\nJesus Christ, the old bastard was really laying into her. But why?\nShe had done nothing wrong. She had so far done everything he asked\nand still he was thrashing her like this.
